Virginia Van Boven

My work has consistently been that of a colorist. In 15 years of painting, I've used oils, watercolor, sumie, collage, and various
dry media,  my all-time favorite is acrylic.  Emotion shows through in all of  my work as well as a sensual enjoyment of paint and the brush. My subjects vary from religious themes to landscapes to still-life to abstracts and combinations of the above.  I strive to always paint honestly and directly, whatever the subject or method.

I studied Art and Illustration for 10 years while our kids were  growing up.  We were living in Maryland at the time, so frequent visits to the National Gallery in Washington D.C. influenced my work towards the European tradition. Then my husband transferred back to the Seattle area., where Asian art is very prevalent., and some of this crept into my work, especially as I attended the U. W. Art School, where I earned my degree.

As a professional artists involvement with other artists and exhibition of my work without constraints is very important to me.  For these reasons I am deeply involved in an Artists' Cooperative: Parklane Gallery in Kirkland.  It is hard to define the "meaning" of painting for me, but I hope that my work communicates respect for life in all its bitter-sweet complexity, and that my painting touches the viewer's heart.
